In a quiet kingdom called Silverwillow, there was a small stone bridge near the edge of the forest. Every night, when the moon rose, a tiny lantern began to glow on that bridge.
No one had ever lit it.
The lantern glowed all by itself.
The lantern was old and round, with golden glass and a small metal handle on top. During the day, it stayed quiet and still. But at night, when the world became calm and dark, the lantern woke up.
The lantern had a kind heart.
It liked to watch the stars. It liked to listen to the river below the bridge. And most of all, it liked to help anyone who felt lost.
One evening, as the lantern glowed softly, it heard a quiet sound.
Sniff. Sniff.
The lantern looked toward the forest path and saw a small figure walking slowly. The figure stopped near the bridge and sat down on a rock.
It was a young princess.
She wore a blue cloak and simple shoes. Her crown was missing, and her eyes were full of tears.
The lantern spoke gently.
“Are you lost?” it asked.
The princess looked up in surprise.
“A talking lantern?” she said softly.
“Yes,” the lantern replied. “And you look very sad.”
The princess wiped her eyes.
“My name is Princess Elara,” she said. “I walked too far from the castle. I followed a butterfly into the forest, and now I cannot find my way home.”
The lantern glowed a little brighter.
“Do not worry,” it said. “I will help you.”
Princess Elara felt a little better.
“Thank you,” she said. “I am scared of the dark.”
“You are not alone,” the lantern said kindly. “I will light the way.”
The lantern floated gently off the bridge and moved forward along the forest path. Princess Elara followed closely behind.
The forest was dark, but not scary. Tall trees stood quietly, and the moonlight touched the leaves above.
Soon, they heard a rustling sound.
Princess Elara stopped.
“What was that?” she asked.
A small rabbit hopped out from behind a tree.
“Good evening,” the rabbit said.
Princess Elara gasped.
“You can talk too?” she asked.
The rabbit nodded.
“We help travelers here,” the rabbit said. “Which way are you going?”
“To the castle,” the lantern said.
The rabbit pointed with its paw.
“Follow the moon path,” it said. “But be careful near the old woods.”
Princess Elara thanked the rabbit, and they continued walking.
As they walked deeper into the forest, the path became narrow. The trees grew closer together, and the shadows grew longer.
Princess Elara felt nervous.
“I do not like this part,” she said.
The lantern moved closer to her.
“Take slow steps,” it said. “Brave steps.”
Princess Elara nodded.
They crossed a wooden bridge over a quiet stream. The moon reflected on the water, making it shine like silver.
On the other side, they reached a small village.
The houses were tiny, and warm lights glowed from the windows. A baker was closing his shop.
“Good evening,” the baker said. “You look tired.”
Princess Elara smiled.
“I am trying to get home,” she said.
The baker handed her a small piece of bread.
“For your journey,” he said kindly.
Princess Elara thanked him.
The lantern glowed warmly.
“Kindness lights the way,” it said.
After leaving the village, the road grew quiet again. The castle was still far away.
Princess Elara’s feet hurt, and she felt tired.
“I do not know if I can go on,” she said.
The lantern stopped and floated in front of her.
“You have already come so far,” it said. “Courage is taking one more step.”
Princess Elara took a deep breath.
“Okay,” she said. “One more step.”
They continued walking.
Soon, they heard soft hooting sounds.
An owl flew down and landed on a tree branch.
“You are almost home,” the owl said. “The castle is just beyond the hill.”
Princess Elara smiled for the first time that night.
They climbed the hill slowly. When they reached the top, Princess Elara saw the castle towers glowing in the moonlight.
“There it is!” she said happily.
She began to run, but stopped and turned back.
“What about you?” she asked the lantern.
The lantern smiled.
“My place is the bridge,” it said. “I help those who are lost.”
Princess Elara felt sad.
“I will never forget you,” she said.
She gently touched the lantern.
“Thank you for being my friend.”
The lantern glowed brighter than ever.
“Go home safely,” it said.
Princess Elara waved as she walked toward the castle.
The lantern floated back to the bridge.
The castle gates opened, and the king and queen ran out.
“Elara!” they cried.
Princess Elara ran into their arms.
“I found my way back,” she said. “With help.”
That night, as the kingdom slept, the little lantern glowed once more on the bridge.
Ready to help the next lost traveler.
