Every morning at Sunny Hill School, the playground was full of happy sounds. Children laughed, ran, and played on the swings and slides. The playground was their favorite place. But one Monday morning, something very strange happened.
When the children ran into the playground, they suddenly stopped. Near the swings, there were footprints on the ground. They were not shoe prints, and they were not like dog or cat prints either. They were small, round, and neat.
“Whose footprints are these?” one child asked.
“I’ve never seen footprints like that before,” another child said.
Soon, all the children were talking about the strange footprints. Teachers came to look too. They smiled and said, “Maybe someone walked here very early.”
But the strange thing was this. The playground was always locked at night.
Three best friends stood close together near the slide. Their names were Mia, Leo, and Noah. Mia loved noticing small details. Leo was brave and liked solving problems. Noah had a big imagination and always asked interesting questions.
Mia bent down and looked carefully at the footprints. “These are not from shoes,” she said softly. “And they are too small to be from grown-ups.”
Leo looked around the playground. “Maybe an animal came here at night,” he said.
Noah shook his head. “But animals don’t usually play on slides,” he said with a smile.
That day, the children kept thinking about the footprints. By lunchtime, the wind blew and children ran around, and the footprints slowly disappeared.
The next morning, the footprints were back again. This time, they were near the sandbox. Now the mystery felt bigger.
“They came again!” Mia said.
“Only at night,” Leo said thoughtfully.
“And only in the playground,” Noah added.
The three friends decided they wanted to solve this mystery. They did not feel scared. They felt curious. After school, they stayed near the playground gate for a while. They watched the ground carefully. They followed the footprints with their eyes.
The footprints went past the swings, around the slide, and toward the big old tree near the fence.
“That tree is very old,” Noah said. “Maybe something lives there.”
Mia nodded. “Look at the ground,” she said. “The leaves are moved gently, not broken.”
Leo smiled. “Whoever made these footprints is careful,” he said.
That evening, Mia went home and told her parents about the footprints. Leo and Noah did the same. All three of them could not stop thinking about the mystery.
The next day, the footprints appeared again. This time, they were clearer than before.
“They are fresh,” Mia said.
“And they are going toward the old tree again,” Leo said.
Noah clapped his hands softly. “Let’s watch tonight,” he said.
That afternoon, the three friends asked their teacher if they could help clean the classroom after school. When the classroom was clean, they quietly walked to the playground and sat behind the benches.
The sun slowly went down. The playground became quiet. The swings stopped moving. The sky turned orange and pink.
Suddenly, Mia pointed. “Did you hear that?”
There was a soft sound. Scratch. Scratch. The friends held their breath. Near the old tree, something small moved. Out came a tiny hedgehog.
It walked slowly into the playground. It sniffed the air and looked around. Then it walked toward the sandbox. Its tiny feet made small, round footprints.
Noah smiled wide. “It’s so cute,” he whispered.
The hedgehog walked to the slide and gently touched it with its nose. Then it walked around the playground, exploring quietly.
“It comes here to play,” Leo said softly.
The hedgehog was not scary at all. It looked friendly and calm.
Suddenly, the hedgehog heard a sound and stopped. It looked around. Mia stood up slowly. “It’s okay,” she said gently.
The hedgehog did not run away. It looked at the children and blinked.
“I think it lives near the tree,” Noah said.
The children understood now. The hedgehog came at night because the playground was quiet and safe.
The next morning, the children told their teacher about the hedgehog. The teacher smiled. “That explains the footprints,” she said.
The school decided to leave a small water bowl near the tree. They made sure the playground stayed safe and clean. The footprints still appeared sometimes, but now everyone knew the secret. Mia, Leo, and Noah smiled every time they saw them.
The playground was not just a place to play anymore. It was a place to share. And the secret footprints were no longer a mystery. They were a sign of a new, friendly friend.
