The Time-Traveling Alarm Clock

My name is Oliver, and I am seven years old. I live in a small, happy house with my mom, my dad, and my fluffy brown cat named Muffin. My room is upstairs, right next to the window. I like my room, but I do not always keep it clean. Toys often sleep on the floor, books hide under my bed, and socks sometimes forget where they belong.

Every night, my mom says the same thing, “Oliver, please clean your room and finish your homework before you sleep.” Sometimes I listen. Sometimes I say, “I will do it later,” and then I forget.

One evening, my dad came into my room holding something special. It was an old alarm clock. It was round, brown, and shiny from years of use. It had two silver bells on top and loud metal feet at the bottom.

“This alarm clock belonged to my grandfather,” Dad said kindly. “Then it was mine. Now it is yours.”

I held the clock carefully. It felt warm, almost alive. “Thank you, Dad,” I said.

That night, I placed the alarm clock on my bedside table. The room was quiet. The Moon shined softly through the window. Soon, I fell asleep.

The next morning, the alarm rang loudly. “RING-RING! RING-RING!”

I jumped in my bed. Suddenly, the clock began to glow. The hands spun very fast. The room shook gently, like a soft wind was moving around me. “Hey!” I shouted.

In one blink, everything stopped. I was still in my room, but something felt wrong. I heard my mom calling, “Oliver! Hurry up! The bus is coming!”

I looked at the clock. Five minutes had passed. I was late. I ran to the kitchen. My backpack was empty. My homework was still on the table.

Mom looked worried. “You forgot your homework again,” she said.

My heart felt heavy. Suddenly, everything spun again. WHOOSH! I was back in my bed. The clock was quiet. “Did I just see the future?” I whispered.

The next day, it happened again. The alarm rang. The light flashed. I jumped a few minutes into the future. This time, I saw myself eating breakfast. Dad asked, “Did you clean your room?”

Future-me said, “Yes.”

But when Dad checked my room, it was still messy. Toys everywhere. Dad looked sad. “That was not honest, Oliver.”

WHOOSH! I was back in bed again. The alarm clock spoke softly. “Good morning, Oliver.”

I gasped. “You can talk?”

“Yes,” said the clock. “My name is Tick-Tock. I help children learn small lessons before they grow big.”

Every morning, Tick-Tock sent me into the future. One morning, I did not feed Muffin. In the future, Muffin meowed sadly. Another morning, I did not finish my homework. In the future, my teacher looked disappointed. Another morning, I forgot to brush my teeth. In the future, my mouth hurt.

Each time, I felt worse. Slowly, I began to understand. The future was not scary. My choices were. So I started changing. I cleaned my room before sleeping. I packed my bag at night. I fed Muffin with a smile. I told the truth, even when my tummy felt funny.

One morning, I wanted to lie again. I did not finish my homework, but I felt tired. The alarm rang. Nothing happened. No lights. No spinning. No future.

Tick-Tock spoke gently. “Today, there is no time travel. Now you must choose by yourself.”

I sat quietly. My heart beat fast. Then I stood up, walked to my mom, and said, “Mom, I did not finish my homework. I am sorry.”

Mom hugged me. “Thank you for being honest.”

That night, Tick-Tock glowed softly. “You have learned,” he said. “Being responsible means doing the right thing, even when no magic helps you.”

The next morning, Tick-Tock rang like a normal clock. I smiled, got out of bed, and started my day. I did not need to see the future anymore. I was ready for today.
