The Haunted Library

Oliver was a quiet boy who loved books more than anything else. He was seven years old and liked places where people whispered and walked softly. That is why the old town library was his favorite place in the whole world.

The library was very old. It had tall wooden shelves that reached the ceiling. The floor made soft creaky sounds when you walked. The lights were warm and yellow, and the air smelled like paper and stories. Every afternoon after school, Oliver went to the library.

One day, something strange happened. As Oliver walked between the shelves, he heard a soft sound. Flip… flip… whisper… He stopped walking.

“Did that book just whisper?” Oliver asked himself. He looked around, but no one was there except Mrs. Maple, the old librarian. She had gray hair, round glasses, and the kindest smile.

“Hello, Oliver,” she said softly. “Looking for a new story today?”

Oliver nodded. “Yes… but Mrs. Maple, do books ever talk?”

Mrs. Maple smiled a little bigger. “Some books do more than talk,” she said.

Oliver felt a tiny shiver of excitement. That evening, the sky outside turned dark and quiet. Mrs. Maple rang the bell. “The library is closing,” she said.

Oliver was about to leave when he noticed something very strange. One book on a high shelf began to glow. Then it fell. Thump! The book opened by itself, and golden light spilled out onto the floor.

Mrs. Maple looked at Oliver. “It seems the library has chosen you.”

Oliver’s heart beat fast. “Chosen me for what?”

“For a journey,” she said.

Before Oliver could speak again, the glowing book pulled him inside. WHOOSH!

Oliver landed on soft green grass. He was no longer in the library. He was in a forest. But this was not a normal forest. The trees had smiling faces, and the air was full of laughter.

Suddenly, small fuzzy creatures jumped out from behind the trees. “Giggle! Giggle!” they laughed. “Hello!” one said. “Welcome to the Giggle Forest!”

Oliver laughed too. “Why is everyone laughing?”

“We laugh all the time!” the creature said. “But now we have a problem.”

The fuzzy monsters laughed so much that they could not build their houses or gather food. Nothing was getting done. Oliver thought for a moment. “Laughter is good,” he said, “but maybe you also need quiet time.”

The monsters stopped laughing. “Quiet?” one asked.

Oliver nodded. “Try laughing later. Work first.”

The monsters tried it. They worked together quietly, then laughed after. “It worked!” they cheered.

The book appeared again and pulled Oliver back. WHOOSH!

Oliver landed in another world. This time, he was inside a dark cave. The cave was calm and quiet. Tiny blue monsters hid behind rocks.

“Hello?” Oliver said gently.

The monsters whispered. “We are scared to speak.”

“Why?” Oliver asked.

“We are afraid our voices are wrong,” they said.

Oliver smiled. “All voices matter. Even quiet ones.” Slowly, one monster spoke louder. Then another. Soon, the cave was full of soft, happy voices. The cave glowed bright.

WHOOSH!

Oliver returned to the library world again. But one book remained. It was dark and dusty. “This is the last book,” Mrs. Maple’s voice echoed. “Be brave.”

Oliver opened it. Inside was a gray world. No color. No sound. Lonely monsters sat on the ground.

“What happened here?” Oliver asked.

“We are fading,” one monster said. “No one reads our story anymore.”

Oliver sat down and opened the book wide. He began to read aloud. As he read, color returned. The sky turned blue. Flowers bloomed. The monsters smiled. Stories came alive again.

The book closed gently. Oliver was back in the library. Mrs. Maple handed him a glowing bookmark. “This means you are always welcome,” she said.

Oliver smiled. From that day on, he knew the truth. Books are not just stories. They are doors. And the library was full of magic.
